Women for RSU is hosting an informal get together to give female students the “inside scoop” about their organization.
Scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 6, the Women for RSU’s Ice Cream Social is an opportunity for female students to learn about the initiative and to meet the group’s mentors in an informal atmosphere while enjoying complimentary ice cream.
“This will be a very informal ‘mix and mingle’ event – one to help our students get to know the mentors within the program,” said Olivia Woody, Women for RSU leadership committee foundation liaison.
Launched in April 2022, Women for RSU is an initiative that is dedicated to the building and sustaining a group of leaders to provide mentoring and networking opportunities for female students. These opportunities come through unique programming and even provide annual scholarships to program participants.
As more than 60 percent of RSU’s student population is female – half of whom are first generation college students – Women for RSU strives to provide these students with a strong female influence in their lives, serving as mentors or role models, Woody said.
“We had great success at recruitment at the recent Big Tent Day event, and we’d like for that momentum to continue at the Ice Cream Social,” she said.
Women for RSU mentors are women in the professional world, whether RSU alumna or not, who have an interest in positively guiding female students and helping cultivate them into future professionals.
Woody said she’s hopeful that the Ice Cream Social will facilitate connections between mentors and students.
“Our biggest hope at the event is to engage students, to inform them about the program and its unique opportunities – internship opportunities, job opportunities upon graduation, even scholarship opportunities,” she said.
Women for RSU mentors are encouraged to meet at least once a month with their mentees. The leadership committee is currently making plans for monthly programming for the upcoming school year.
The Women for RSU Ice Cream Social will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, on the Sarkeys Plaza in front of the Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center.
This event is sponsored by OklaHomes Realtors.
