Fifteen Rogers State University students and faculty participated in the 79th anniversary convention of the Oklahoma Speech, Theatre and Communication Association (OSTCA), held Sept. 13 in Tahlequah, Okla. Participants presented papers, responded to panels and produced poster presentations.
RSU senior Josh Buehler, from Oologah, earned the convention’s top undergraduate paper award for his presentation, “A laughing matter: The popularity of satirical news shows.”
In addition to an award certificate, Buehler won a cash prize of $100. Fellow senior Stacey Jameson, appearing at her second OSTCA convention, won the top poster presentation with her paper, “More than a movie: A content analysis of children’s animated films.” Both students were advised by Dr. Juliet Evusa, assistant professor of communications.
“We are very proud of our students’ achievements at this convention,” said Dr. Jeff Gentry, Head of the RSU Department of Communications.
Other student participants were Julie Husong of Kansas, Okla., Ryan Floyd of Claremore, Kiri Martin of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mark Lane of Claremore, and Candice Nivison of Tulsa.
Faculty sponsors and participants were Evusa, Gentry, Dr. Richard Boyd, Lee Williams, Ronni Jackson, Jana Elliott, Dr. Greg Thompson and Dr. Mike McKeon.
