Rogers State University School of Nursing seniors recently attended a daylong workshop at which they received specialized training in child abuse and neglect and domestic violence recognition.
Held March 8 at Haruv USA at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, RSU Nursing Simulation Learning Day featured lectures from experts in the fields of psychology, pediatrics, and domestic violence intervention, with specialized simulations designed to help workshop attendees identify pediatric child abuse and domestic violence situations.
According to Rogers State University Undergraduate Nursing Program Coordinator Samantha Rhea, MSN, RN, the workshop was staged through a partnership between the RSU School of Nursing and Health Professions and Haruv USA. Haruv USA is a Jewish-based instituted focused on the interprofessional education and training of students who touch children’s lives.
Lecture presentations included “Intro to Child Abuse and Neglect from a Medical Perspective” by Dr. Lauren Conway, DO, assistant professor with the Department of Pediatrics at the OU-TU School of Community Medicine in Tulsa; “Domestic Violence Through a Child’s Eyes” by Jordan Gustin, Licensed Professional Counselor, MA; and “Lived Experience Expert” by Heather Simon, an adult survivor of childhood domestic violence and community advocate.
Following the presentations, students broke into smaller groups and participated in unique simulations that demonstrated potential experiences involving child maltreatment and domestic violence that they could encounter in their nursing or other healthcare profession.
Rhea said the workshop offered students a deeper understanding of child mistreatment and domestic violence, trained them to recognize the signs of abuse, and taught them how to handle it when it’s encountered, whether in a clinical setting or in everyday life.
