Rogers State University introduced the American Advertising Federation as a new student organization for communications majors last month. The AAF has more than 140 College Chapters across the U.S. with nearly 4,000 student members.

The membership includes participation in the communications honor society, Alpha Delta Sigma, which recognizes scholastic achievement in advertising studies and is the only national, professional advertising honorary society in American higher education. Twenty members are part of RSU’s 2021-22 charter class.

“The AAF gives RSU students many opportunities for networking, national competitions, and exposure in the media industry. Participation in Alpha Delta Sigma will allow students to plug in to the media industry outside of the classroom,” Communications Professor Bruce Hartley said.

Senior Taylor Alley, from Tulsa, is the club’s first president. This leadership role will give her the experience and leadership skills she needs to excel in the corporate communications field.

“I am eager to develop new strengths and skills in this role. The development of this new club provides me and my peers opportunities to gain valuable insights into the advertising world, while making connections with industry professionals for future internship and job opportunities,” Alley said.

Members are allowed to enter projects to be considered for AAF Addy Awards in the spring. The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting nearly 35,000 entries every year in local AAF Ad Club competitions. The Addy Awards recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising.

“The experience from advertising competitions allows members to be more competitive for jobs. This sets RSU apart from other regional universities,” Hartley said.

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved restructured degree options within the department of communications at RSU.  A Bachelor of Arts in Communications includes options in strategic communication, broadcasting and new media, and communication arts.

AAF is open to all students at RSU who are interested in marketing or advertising. Dues are $15 per semester. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 5:15 p.m. in Baird Hall, Room 226/228.
