Rogers State University will be hosting some of Oklahoma’s brightest high school students this month as the university selects members for its top academic program.
The RSU Honors Program, now in its second year, has been receiving applications from across Oklahoma and the program’s selection committee will be inviting students and their families to campus for Honors Day on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Honors Day event will provide an opportunity to interview program candidates, as well as allow students and their families the opportunity to tour campus and meet RSU students, faculty and staff, said Dr. Jim Ford, director of the RSU Honors Program.
The RSU Honors Program application deadline for priority consideration is Feb. 1, but qualified applicants can be considered after that date, Ford said.
Students selected for the RSU Honors Program will receive a scholarship package that fully covers tuition, fees, books, on-campus housing and a $500 annual stipend. Scholarships and awards from other sources may affect the total scholarship package, and all actual amounts will be determined in conjunction with a student’s federal aid package. Eighteen students were selected for the inaugural honors program class in fall 2005.
The honors program offers students unique benefits including priority enrollment and specialized honors classes with curriculum geared for students desiring additional academic challenges. Opportunities also exist for faculty/student joint research projects and other involvement within the student’s area of academic interest.
The honors program has a strong “service learning” emphasis that will allow students to work closely with government agencies, social service agencies, or non-commercial entities to round out their academic studies. Such service learning projects will be “real world” experience that directly relates to the student’s areas of academic or professional interests.
“The RSU Honors Program is an engaging learning environment that both challenges and rewards our state’s best students and will help set the stage for their future successes,” Ford said.
Enrollment in the RSU Honors Program is limited to incoming freshman with an ACT Composite score of at least 26 and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3.
