The Rogers State University Choir will present its first concert of the spring semester on Tuesday, March 23.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Centennial Center on the RSU campus in Claremore. Donations will be accepted.
The title of the concert is “Spring is in the Air” and will celebrate the use of poetry in music, according to Nancy Salgado, choir director. Music performed will range from the compositions of Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn to the creative works of the more modern choral arranger Mary Lynn Lightfoot.
The concert will feature Lightfoot’s “The Bells,” which utilizes text written by American poet and writer, Edgar Allan Poe. It also will feature “Die Nachtigall,” a poem by German-born Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which was set to music by Mendelssohn, and other artistically rendered poems by well-known historical figures such as Thomas Moore and Christopher Marlowe. Lyrics represent the evolution of poetry over time, featuring texts from as far back as the 10th century, to those written as recently as the late 1800s, Salgado said.
