The President’s Leadership Class (PLC) at Rogers State University recently presented donations of $500 to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma and $150 to Claremont Elementary School in Claremore.
The contributions were the result of fundraising projects the PLC conducted on behalf of the organizations at the RSU campus this spring.
The gift to Big Brothers and Big Sisters was the result of the PLC’s “RSU’s Got Talent” show and the gift to Claremont was raised through donut sales on campus.
Laura Greenlee, of Choctaw, Okla., PLC president, along with other PLC students, recently presented checks to representatives of both organizations, including Jessica Wilbourn, area director of the Claremore office of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma, and Kellye Shuck, principal of Claremont Elementary School, and Brian Young, assistant principal.
RSU students and employees recently participated in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraising event, raising more than $4,000 for the organization’s Claremore chapter.
Last year, RSU initiated an adoption of Claremont Elementary School to enhance the educational attainment, social awareness and quality of life for Claremont students. RSU students, faculty and staff participate in tutoring, lunch buddy, supply drives and other support for Claremont students.
The PLC is a four-year scholarship program to assist students in the development of leadership skills and personal and professional growth.
The organization provides incoming freshmen with unique opportunities to foster their leadership skills and academic growth.
Each class member works closely with student groups and university administration to improve services to students and the community, said Dr. Carolyn Taylor, professor in the RSU Department of History and Political Science, and PLC coordinator.
Responsibilities of PLC members include volunteering for campus service projects, being active members of student organizations, attending selected RSU alumni programs and RSU Foundation events, and visiting high schools with RSU recruiters.
Students selected for the PLC receive an annual scholarship. PLC members are selected after a competitive process, including on-campus interviews with campus representatives.
