Partnership Brings Private Pilot Ground School to Claremore

A private pilot ground school at Claremore Regional Airport will begin in May thanks to a newly formed partnership between Rogers State University, RSU Public TV and Tulsa Aviation Group.

Known as RSU Aviation, the ground school is a noncredit program designed to prepare participants for the FAA knowledge examination, which is required for a private pilot license. The RSU Aviation private pilot ground school is a six-week program with classes held 6-8:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday. The inaugural class will start on Monday, May 4, at the Claremore Regional Airport.

Instruction for the classes will be provided by Tulsa Aviation Group (TAG), which has an established track record of offering ground school aviation training in the Tulsa market. TAG is based at the Atlantic Aviation FBO at Tulsa International Airport and its expansion to the Claremore location will allow more area students the opportunity to pursue dreams of becoming pilots.

“Not everyone who wishes to learn to fly lives in Tulsa. Those who live in the Claremore area now have the same opportunity,” said Casey Trammel, a partner at TAG.

The ground school’s objective is to prepare individuals for the FAA Knowledge Examination with course topics to include flight physiology, airplane systems, aerodynamic principals, airspace, aeronautical charts, navigation, communication, meteorology, aircraft performance, weight and balance, and regulations. Cost for the class is $390, and a $100 deposit is needed to secure a seat.

The course cost includes all academic materials, but does not include cost of the FAA Knowledge Examination. The course also does not include flight time, as all instruction will be ground based.

According to Royal Aills, general manager of RSU Public TV, “Partnering with TAG is a great strategy for the station and the university to better utilize our resources to expand opportunities for the prospective student in northeast Oklahoma.”

The television station recently has been exploring methods to expand noncredit, continuing education opportunities in the region, and this partnership with TAG for the RSU Aviation program is the station’s inaugural effort for noncredit programming.
