Communications, Justice Administration degrees now go to state regents for approval
Rogers State University has received initial approval to offer two new bachelor’s degrees, which will further expand RSU’s degree offerings.
The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, which is RSU’s governing body, agreed during its Monday meeting at the RSU campus in Claremore to approve a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Bachelor of Science in Justice Administration.
The degree proposals now will be sent to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for its consideration. If approved by the state regents, the proposal would then be sent to the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools for formal approval. The degree could be offered by summer or fall 2004 pending approval from the two reviewing bodies.>
“These two new bachelor’s degree programs answer the expressed needs of our students as well as regional employers,” RSU President Joe Wiley said. “Rogers State University is committed to expanding higher education options for the residents of northeastern Oklahoma.”
The bachelor’s degree in communications will offer options in radio-television and corporate communications. The degree program will prepare students for careers in broadcast or print media, marketing, advertising, public relations, sales or promotions. The degree will allow RSU to further utilize its on-campus broadcasting facilities, which include full-powered television and radio stations. RSU is the only public university in Oklahoma to operate its own full-power public television station, and RSU Radio (KRSC FM 91.3) is the only alternative college radio station on a campus in Oklahoma.
The bachelor’s degree in justice administration with a law enforcement emphasis will prepare students for careers in legal and criminal justice systems. Student interest also has been high for this degree program, and state and regional agencies have experienced rapidly expanding needs in this career field.
RSU currently offers bachelor’s degrees in applied technology; biology with options in environmental conservation and medical/molecular; business administration with options in accounting and management; business information technology with options in computer network administration and software development/multimedia; liberal arts; and social science with options in history/political science and psychology/sociology.
