Rogers State delivered walk-off home runs in back-to-back games to defeat Pittsburg State twice by run-rule at Hillcat Field on Wednesday.
The Hillcats broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of Game 1 with five runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from freshman Kelli Dunagan. Senior Denise Garcia added a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth to make it an 8-0 lead and halt the game via the run-rule. Garcia was 2-for-3 for the game with five RBI. Sophomore Randi Tyler went 2-for-2 with a double. Dunagan pitched a five-inning complete game and allowed just two hits to record the shutout victory.
In Game 2 the Hillcats picked up right where they left in Game 1 as Megan Wood led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run. RSU added three runs on four hits in the third inning to stretch the lead to 4-0. Three Hillcat errors in the top of the fifth allowed Pitt State to score its first two runs of the game and cut the lead in half, 4-2. However, RSU responded with five runs in the fifth and shut the door with a three-run sixth. Freshman Sydni Jones cranked her second long ball of the season in the sixth to end the game via the run-rule again, 12-3. Jones finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two runs scored. Wood also tallied three hits as Stephanie Eggers pitched six innings to earn the win.
Coach Dawn Reed’s club improved to 15-6 with the series sweep. The Hillcats will face Division 1 opponent University of San Diego at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 10:30 a.m.
