Members of Rogers State University’s President’s Leadership Class welcomed Poetic Justice Executive Director Ellen Stackable as special guest for this month’s Excellence in Leadership Speaker Series, held Wednesday, Sept. 11.

While pursuing her master’s degree in liberal studies at the University of Oklahoma, Stackable became aware of the issue of mass incarceration of women in Oklahoma. As an English teacher of 20 years, she knew the power of writing to transform lives, so she wanted to teach writing to incarcerated women. In March 2014, she helped start Poetic Justice, working with incarcerated women at the Tulsa County Jail.

Sponsored by the President’s Leadership Class, the Excellence in Leadership Speaker Series provides local and regional speakers the opportunity to share their experiences, insight and leadership philosophies with members of the RSU community.  Selected speakers come from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and careers. All speakers make their presentations in the Baird Hall Performance Studio on the RSU campus in Claremore.

October’s Excellence in Leadership Speaker series will feature Jessi Stringer, city planning consultant at Country City, LLC, and architectural designer at Eight Point Creative, LLC.

President’s Leadership Class is a four-year scholarship program designed to develop students’ leadership skills and enhance their overall academic experience, with scholarships available for those within the program.
