Rogers State University and Cameron University will co-host a preview day for high school students interested in a degree in Elementary Education or Secondary Education.
Future Educators Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center on RSU’s Claremore campus.
Attendees will gain valuable insight into the university’s education programs through helpful and informative resources, interacting with current RSU students and faculty members, observing an education class, and touring the Claremore campus.
The Bachelor of Science in elementary education and Bachelor of Arts in social studies education are offered by Cameron University on the RSU campus. Students enter RSU, earn an Associate of Arts in either elementary education or secondary education during their first four semesters, and then continue for their final four semesters as Cameron students to earn their bachelor’s degree, but do so all on the RSU campus in Claremore. Both Rogers State University and Cameron University are regional institutions under the governance of the OU Board of Regents.
“Cameron University is pleased to be co-hosting this event with RSU,” said Janet Valencia, education specialist, Cameron University on RSU’s campus. “CU has a positive working relationship with RSU and for us to be able to share this event is great for both universities.”
Information covered during the event will include available degree plans (elementary and secondary education), the admission process, scholarships and financial aid, residential life, and much more.
“During the event, we will discuss several things, such as local faculty, local observations, practicums and student teaching placements at area schools which give students the opportunity to showcase themselves to local school districts for future teaching positions,” Valencia said. “A student panel also will be there to discuss their transition to CU and what classes are like.”
Cameron University offers two bachelor’s degrees on the RSU campus in Claremore: elementary education and social studies education. RSU students may complete their associate degree in elementary or secondary education, then move on to Cameron’s bachelor’s degree program without having to leave the Claremore area.
CU students also have the same access to dorms, the cafeteria, library and computer services as RSU, but their bachelor’s degree will be issued from Cameron University.
“The CU program is based on a cohort model,” Valencia said. “When a student enters our program, they enter with students who will be in the same classes throughout their time at CU. Classes are prearranged so the student will know exactly what they need to take each semester to complete their degree.
“This program is a win-win for both the schools and the students who wish to earn their education degree locally,” she said. “We look forward to talking to students about becoming Cameron Aggies.”
