Months before the Rogers State University Cheerleading Squad has a chance to cheer the Hillcats to victory; the new squad is winning awards of its own.
Last month, the squad attended and competed at the National Cheerleaders Association camp at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. The 14-woman squad was created this spring and began practicing in June.
The team won one red ribbon, two blue ribbons and a spirit stick; placed second in the Spirit Routine competition; and qualified for a national competition to be held in Florida in April. There were more than 500 students in more than 30 squads attending the camp.
“I am amazed at how talented they are for a brand new squad,” said Katie Belcher, cheerleading coach.
Belcher, a graduate of Claremore High School, was hired as the cheerleading coach this summer. She attended the University of Central Oklahoma and was a member of the university’s nationally competitive cheerleading squad.
Currently she is pursuing a physical therapy assistant degree program at Tulsa Community College.
The cheerleading squad includes the following students:
- Arianna Anderson of Claremore;
