A locally produced radio program designed to help area residents prepare for a weather-related disaster, prevent household fires and apply basic first aid will air on RSU Radio in July and August.
“Ready When the Time Comes” is the name of the news program, produced by RSU Radio and hosted by Mark Ogle, service director of the American Red Cross chapter covering Rogers, Mayes and Wagoner counties, and Rebecca Phipps, community education coordinator at the Tulsa Area chapter of the American Red Cross.
The 30-minute program will air at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, and at 8:00 a.m. Sunday, July 20. The program also will air at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, and at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10.
RSU Radio, operated by Rogers State University and broadcasting from the Claremore campus, is located at 91.3 on the FM dial and can be heard live online at www.rsuradio.com.
During the program, the disaster preparedness professionals will discuss severe weather procedures, including advance notice such as watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service, how and when to take shelter, and what to do while driving a car, said Cathy Coomer, RSU Radio general manager.
“What if you are driving and the weather becomes threatening? The rules have changed. Hiding under an overpass is now considered unsafe by many disaster professionals,” Coomer said.
The program also will help residents prepare for and survive flooding, power outages and winter storms, she said.
In addition, the program will feature information on how households can prepare for fire-related emergencies, including checking fire detectors and safely using space heaters and other home heating devices.
