Members of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Oklahoma Historical Records Advisory Board and the Claremore Museum of History met at Rogers State University May 15 during the Emergency Preparedness and Response Workshop.
Held in the Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA) Museum Conference Room on the campus of RSU in Claremore, the workshop was attended by 25 participants, representing museums from across the state, including representatives from Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Muskogee’s War Memorial Park, Tulsa City-County Library, and several others.
During the workshop, attendees learned strategies to help them effectively develop emergency preparedness plans or to respond to an emergency impacting collections in their museums.
The instructor for the workshop was cultural heritage preservation consultant Rebecca Elder, who helps her clients find practical and achievable solutions to care for their history collections. Elder collaborates with libraries, museums, archives, municipalities and families to tailor preservation plans to their respective resources and timelines.
Topics covered during the day-long workshop included creating an emergency plan, risk assessments, working effectively with first responders, determining salvage priorities for collections and salvage basics.
Following the morning class, OMA Curator Dewey Wilson and Assistant Curator Carlos Galvey, both OMA alumni and veterans, gave workshop attendees a tour of the museum.
The workshop was made possible in partnership with the Oklahoma Museums Association, Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Oklahoma Historical Records Advisory Board with funding support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
The Oklahoma Military Academy Museum is located on the RSU Campus in Claremore on the second floor of Meyer Hall.
