Rachelle Arjay, a senior communications major at Rogers State University, has been awarded the 2010 RSU Public Television Media Scholarship for the spring 2011 semester.
Her $500 scholarship award was announced recently on air during RSU Public TV’s annual Winterfest membership drive.
A former music major at Tulsa Community College, Arjay, is from Broken Arrow, Okla. She transferred to RSU to fulfill her dream of teaching children through puppets. She investigated the degree programs available at RSU and decided on the communications program, which would give her the hands-on skills to produce a quality children’s television show, said Dan Schiedel, general manager of RSU Public TV.
During her tenure at RSU, Arjay has served as video bay tutor and personal assistant, and filmed many on-campus activities. She has appeared on RSU Public TV in annual Springfest and Winterfest membership drives and served as a questioner for an on-air political forum. She has also participated in short-term mission trips to Jordan and Israel, sang with the Tulsa Signature Chorale and Symphony, directed a children’s choir and served as director of the Tulsa Bible Church Puppet Ministry. She is an accomplished violinist and practices basic American sign language.
Her coursework has given her experience in video filming and editing as well as audio recording and editing, Schiedel said. She intends to use those skills to shoot movies or short programs herself, or be able to instruct a team how to translate her ideas to video. She also has developed directing skills and learned the importance of advertising.
For her award, Arjay was required to submit an application, a resume, two letters of recommendation and her college transcript. The scholarship program is designed to cultivate a new generation of outstanding business leaders for the media and information industries.
