The Rogers State University Esports team was named tournament champions this month in Oklahoma Association of Collegiate Esports’ Battle for Oklahoma tournament. RSU secured the victory with University of Tulsa placing second. Other competitors included Oklahoma State University, Northeastern Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Redlands Community College.
Coached by Esports instructor Keith Denslow and Esports student manager Colt Berry, the students took the first-place title in the games League of legends, Rocket league, Overwatch and Valorant. Earlier this year RSU Esports won their second state college championship in the game Valorant.
In 2018, RSU became the first university in Oklahoma to offer Esports as an official university activity. The program is housed in a dedicated Esports Arena with 18 gaming stations and offers scholarships across four competitive teams.
Among the general public, Esports has a relatively low profile but is wildly popular worldwide and has gained traction in the United States in recent years. Esports is predicted to reach revenues of a half billion dollars by 2022, making it the fastest growing gaming industry.
RSU is a dynamic, regional university in the Tulsa metro offering degree programs and options meeting the needs for Oklahoma’s top 10 fastest growing industries as identified by the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission. RSU operates its main residential campus in Claremore, with additional campuses in Bartlesville and Pryor.
RSU offers an Esports degree option within the Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology. The RSU Esports competitive gaming program is open to all enrolled RSU students.
