The Rogers State University Stratton Taylor Library will host a book talk Feb. 24 discussing the topics of “Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty,” a book by Wall Street Journal reporters Roger Thurow and Scott Kilman.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Larry Green, associate professor and head of the RSU Department of Biology. It will be held at 2 p.m. in room 207 of the library.
The discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
“Enough” explores why starvation persists on global epidemic levels despite the existence of tools and knowledge with the potential to virtually eradicate hunger. Thurow and Kilman build on the reporting that earned them a nomination for a Pulitzer Prize by exploring the policies and events that have allowed poverty and starvation to continue.
“One of the greatest scientific achievements of the last century was the tremendous increase in agricultural productivity,” Green said. “Today we produce more food on less farmland than 40 years ago. Yet, the problem of hunger and famine remain, with more people at risk than ever before in history.”
Green received his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in plant science in 2004. He joined the RSU faculty in 2005. His research interests include the genetic interactions of wheat plants with pathogenic fungi.
