The Rogers State University Theatre Program will present Stephanie Alison Walker’s “American Home” at 7 p.m., March 7-8 at the Baird Hall Performance Studio.
Winner of the 2011 American Blues Theater’s inaugural Blue Ink Playwriting Competition, “American Home” tells the story about Americans forced to renegotiate the American Dream and the extremes people will go when faced with losing everything. And in the end, it shows the resilience of the American spirit.
Walker and her blog – Love in the Time of Foreclosure — was recently featured on ABC Nightly News on a story about the current status of the housing market.
The story of “American Home” centers around activities in the homes of struggling families, including:
- Florence Rainwater, a 90-year-old widow from Ann Arbor, Mich., who just wants to be in her home with her memories until her last day.
- Mike and Dana Washington, a 30-something couple who thought they would be in their dream home in the hills of Los Angeles forever, or at least until they could trade-up.
- Prosperity Preacher Paula, who never imagined in her wildest dreams that her Florida mega-church would ever be threatened by foreclosure, and
- Robbie West, a Michigan cop who just wants to help people and does not enjoy kicking them out of their homes.
The cast of characters includes Morgan Baker of Mounds as Dana Washington, Andrew Nichols of Pryor as Mike Washington, Marilynn Bullard of Pryor as Florence Rainwater, Matia Wallace of Claremore as Prosperity Preacher Paula and Reporter 1, Galen Pike of Rushville, Ill. as Robbie, Marcus Jones, Jim, and Buyer 2, Hanna Barnoski of Claremore as Reporter 2, Creditor, and Fannie Mae, Ashley Dotson of Tulsa as Loretta, Dana’s Mom, and Realtor, and Liliokalani Willy of Tulsa as Buyer 1 (Dana #2), Creditor, and Jenny Lancaster.
