Cameron University will offer a bachelor’s degree in elementary education on the Rogers State University campus in Claremore beginning this fall.
Under the CU-RSU collaborative elementary education degree program, students can earn an associate in arts degree in early childhood/elementary education in two years from RSU. Then students can transition seamlessly into Cameron’s portion of the program, completing all requirements for a bachelor’s degree from Cameron in two years on the RSU campus in Claremore.
Governed by the same board of regents, Cameron and RSU will utilize innovative scheduling approaches to offer the seamless “two plus two” degree program, allowing students to obtain a four-year degree in elementary education in Claremore with no interruption or need to transfer to other institutions.
“Public school officials have told us there is a shortage in early childhood and elementary school teachers in northeast Oklahoma,” said RSU President Dr. Joe Wiley. “And studies have shown that well-trained teachers can make a significant impact on the success and achievement of pre-K and elementary school students. Collaborating with Cameron University will allow us to combine RSU’s long-established two-year program with Cameron’s highly regarded bachelor’s degree in elementary education.”
Dr. Lynn Arnn has been named Cameron coordinator of elementary education and will work full-time on the RSU campus in Claremore. Previously, she served as a regional coordinator of the state-sponsored “Schools Attuned” program, an initiative to help teachers understand and manage learning differences among students. She also taught at Carnegie Elementary School in Tulsa and served as elementary education coordinator at Bacone College. She earned a doctoral degree in occupational and adult education from Oklahoma State University.
Cameron’s elementary education program is known for its strong enrollment and solid graduation numbers and has traditionally been offered at the university’s Lawton campus.
Cameron’s upper-division program on the RSU campus will consist of one semester-long class during each semester, four elementary education courses offered in three-week blocks throughout the semester and field components and student teaching internships in area elementary school classrooms.
