The Mooney family of Claremore has established the Mark Mooney Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Rogers State University in honor of Mark Mooney, who passed away last year after a battle with cancer.
The endowment will fund RSU scholarships for graduates of Sequoyah High School in Rogers County who are able to demonstrate financial need. The first scholarships will be awarded to students this fall.
The scholarship endowment was established by several members of the Mooney family, including Jack and Bobbye Mooney of Claremore, Mark’s parents; Cindy Mooney of Claremore, his wife; Rhonda (who originated the idea of the scholarship endowment) and Jeff Howell of Claremore, his daughter and son-in-law; and Robert Mooney of Tulsa and Chapman Mooney of Dallas, his brothers.
Mooney passed away in March 2004 at the age of 45 after a battle with cancer. A longtime Claremore resident, he was president of Steel Service Co. He was born in Birmingham, Ala., and was raised and attended elementary school in Tulsa. He attended Sequoyah High School and graduated from Claremore High School in 1977.
“The Mooney family has generously established this endowment as a positive reflection on Mark’s passion for life, and also to demonstrate how individual resources can be used to help future generations of students,” said Dr. Danette Boyle, RSU vice president for development.
The scholarship endowment was established through the RSU Foundation. The principal of the endowment will remain intact and earned interest will be utilized to fund scholarships for RSU students.
