The reality that we’re all “walking wounded” – having experienced psychological or physical pain at some point in our lives – is behind a series of oil paintings by Tulsa artist Beth Jernigan on display at Rogers State University.
“Walking Wounded” is the title of the exhibition that will run from Sept. 16 through Oct. 15 at Foundations Gallery, located in Baird Hall on the RSU campus in Claremore.
The series of eight paintings feature “wounded” or broken toy soldiers who, like many real people, show a life of wear and tear, including scars that might be visible or hidden, according to the artist.
“The idea is that these toys were worn over time and manipulated by someone who loved them,” Jernigan said. “The similarity to real life is obvious, but with us, sometimes our damage shows on the outside and sometimes it doesn’t.”
The paintings were inspired by Jernigan’s collection of vintage toys. A few of the actual broken toy soldiers will be displayed in the exhibition alongside the paintings.
Jernigan received a master’s of fine arts degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and a bachelor’s of fine arts degree from Oklahoma State University.
A free public reception will be held for the artist from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the gallery. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
