Rogers State University will host a July 28 graduation ceremony for area residents who have earned their General Educational Development (GED) certificate this year through the on-campus program.
More than 60 GED graduates have been invited to participate in the ceremony, which will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, July 28, at Post Hall on the RSU’s Claremore campus.
RSU and Union Public Schools jointly provide adult education courses and GED testing to area residents who have not earned their high school diplomas. The courses are offered during the day at the Church of Christ Claremore and during the evening at RSU’s Health Sciences Building. Monthly GED tests are administered at RSU.
The classes are useful not only for students seeking to take the GED examination, but also for those wanting to brush up on basic skills needed for other examinations for a variety of commercial licenses, said Karen Hudgens, director of RSU’s Learning Center.
The classes are free and operated on an “open entry” basis, which allows students to begin the classes as their schedule allows. Classes occur year-round and the coursework can be tailored to meet individual students needs. The amount of time students need to prepare for the GED test will vary.
Many students who complete their GED often go on to pursue college credit, Hudgens said. In fact, students who successfully pass the GED examination with a score of 50 or higher are eligible to apply for a Sarkeys Scholarship, which provides higher education opportunities for students who earn their GED certificate.
