RSU’s Bachelor of Science in Biology prepares you to meet this demand, offering three specializations, unique research opportunities, and hands-on experience in the lab and the field. B.S. in Biology Degree Requirements

Your coursework will include general principles of biology, including botany, genetics, zoology, and research methods. From there, you’ll choose an emphasis based on your interests and strengths.

Environmental Conservation Option: Earn a biology degree program that goes beyond traditional wildlife and fisheries management. This program emphasizes taxonomy and game management and includes courses in ecosystem management, landscape ecology, plant and animal toxicology, aquatic biology, and threats to diversity. Students in this program may volunteer with Oklahoma’s Blue Thumb, a statewide citizen science program that trains volunteers to monitor creeks and streams and share their knowledge of water quality with others.

Medical/Molecular Biology Option: Participate in the rapidly expanding field of molecular and cellular biology. In this emphasis, you’ll learn the basics of biotechnology and practice in differentiating body tissues (using actual human tissue samples. You’ll also learn molecular lab techniques, research methods, and more.

General Biology Option: Interested in a different area of biology? The B.S. in Biology: General Biology degree allows you to explore areas like organismal biology, functional biology, and cell and molecular biology.

Biology Program Features

At RSU, becoming a biology major means you’ll complete rigorous preparatory work that allows you to achieve your personal and professional goals. We offer three biology degrees that allow you to explore traditional disciplines of botany, zoology, and genetics, along with newer areas of study such as molecular biology, conservation and ecology. Regardless of the track you choose, you’ll conduct research to present to your peers and complete an internship in your area of study. Here’s what else you’ll experience in RSU’s biology programs:

• Three immersive specializations in biology. Choose from medical/molecular, environmental conservation, or general biology based on your interests and goals — and take advantage of laboratory, research, and field experiences in each.
• Top-notch experiences in the lab and the field. Work with the latest technology in the lab, including real-time PCR, gas chromatography, and Li-Cor imaging equipment. You’ll also complete service-learning projects and visit field locations to learn about water monitoring, endangered species monitoring, handling of animals, and more.
• Preparation for professional careers and graduate study. Enter the industry in an environmental or health care position right away or go on to earn a variety of higher education degrees. At the end of the program, your studies will help you be prepared to take the GRE, MCAT, DAT, and PCAT tests, which will help you apply to grad school.

• Environmental Biology:
  • Become an environmental or chemical technician
