RSU Music Fall Concert Set for Oct. 7
The Rogers State University Music Program will present its annual fall concert on Monday, Oct. 7, featuring the Jazz Ensemble, University Choir and Concert Band.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Will Rogers Auditorium on the RSU campus in Claremore. Canned food donations to benefit the RSU "Food for Thought" food pantry will be accepted for admission.
The ensembles will perform a variety of works from choral and band standards like "The Arrow and the Song" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the "Hosts of Freedom" march by Karl L. King to a mixture of jazz standards like "St. Thomas" and "Autumn Leaves" and lighter jazz fare such as "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" from the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band.
"RSU music ensembles have something for everyone, whether they are a jazz lover or casual listener," said Dr. Kirk Weller, RSU director of bands.
The ensembles are comprised of RSU students and members of the community. Last year's addition of the Concert Band to the curriculum is a reflection of the ongoing effort to reestablish the RSU music program, Weller said.
"The program is seeking to expand and improve its offerings and impact on the university and community," he said. There will be a short reception in the lobby following the concert hosted by our Colony of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary band fraternity.
The RSU Music Program's Winter Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25, in the Will Rogers Auditorium.
In addition to its concert schedule, the music program will working with the Claremore Symphony League to hold an audition clinic master classes at the Claremore campus on Oct. 17-18 for area high school students who are preparing for upcoming music competitions. The clinics will be offered by Tulsa Symphony performers who will work with small groups of musicians to review and critique performances. The master class sessions are free to area high school students, but advance registration is required.
