
NEWSJanuary 10, 2013 RSU to Provide Free Tax Prep Beginning Jan. 28For the first time, Rogers State University will provide free tax preparation services to the public. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be staffed by trained and certified volunteers and will be available to any individual making less than $60,000 a year. The program is open to all communities in the area and appointments will be handled by Claremore-based Community Action Resource and Development, Inc. Volunteers are RSU students who have successfully completed Internal Revenue Service training and certification exams for federal and state tax preparation. Student work will be reviewed for accuracy by RSU faculty. All students also have achieved ethics certification and signed a confidentiality agreement protecting the privacy of all clients. "The VITA program offers a valuable, professional service to the community and provides our students a chance to earn the professional hours required to sit for the CPA exam. We guarantee those who take advantage of the free program will receive exceptional service," said P.J. Gorden, RSU instructor of business and VITA administrator. VITA will open on January 28 and run through tax day, April 15. Hours of operation are Monday and Tuesday, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Appointments will be held at the RSU Innovation Center at 2000 University Dr. on the Claremore Campus. The program will close during RSU's spring break, March 18-22. Clients must provide the following documents for VITA volunteers to prepare their tax returns:
