RSU Communications Students Receive Awards at OBEA Competition

Several communications students at Rogers State University received awards at the recent Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association Student Competition held at the University of Oklahoma.

RSU students Kyle Olson of Owasso and Ryan Floyd of Oologah won second place for their "RSU Radio Giveaway" radio promotion and Josh Buehler, also of Oologah, won third place in the same category for his "RSU Radio Halloween Imaging" spots.

Gary Webb of Verdigris won second place for his personality air check "Turbo on the Air" and Kyle Olson, Ryan Floyd and Candice Nivison of Tulsa won third place in the same category for their "RSU Your Morning Show" air check.

Olson also won second place honors for his entertainment narrative rap rendition of "This McCain Thang".

"I am very proud of our students. Out of 12 entries, we came home with 5 awards," said Cathy Coomer, RSU communications instructor and adviser to the RSU Student Broadcasting Association.

Fifteen Oklahoma universities and community colleges competed this year, entering a record 278 entries in 16 categories in television, radio and scriptwriting. Some of those categories included TV commercials, magazine talk, hard news stories, sports play-by-play, promotional spots, documentary series, public service announcements and personality "airchecks." 

Students who received first, second and third place awards will be honored at the annual Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters (OAB) conference on April 17 in Tulsa. The OAB also will honor the students as well as those selected to receive five OAB scholarships.

Coomer is serving her fourth year as the RSU faculty representative of the OBEA, was elected co-chair of this year's OBEA Student Awards competition.
