Softball Hillcats Fall Short in Capital City Classic

After a tough loss in Day 1 of pool play dashed Rogers State’s hopes of claiming a tournament championship, the Hillcats were upended twice on Saturday in the Capital City Classic at the Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.

The Hillcats fell 4-2 in the early game on Saturday, an exhibition contest against a team of Russian Nationals RSU took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double by Bridgett Stewart. However, four hits and two Hillcat errors led to a four-run fifth for the Russians that proved to be the difference. Kacy Ward went 2-for-2 for RSU as Stewart tallied both RBI.

RSU faced No. 5 St. Gregory’s in the final game of pool play. The Hillcats fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and never recovered. Megan Wood scored the lone run for RSU in the third when Taylor Whisenhunt drew a bases loaded walk. St. Gregory’s pushed across a run in the second and a solo homer in the fifth to reach the final margin, 5-1.

Coach Dawn Reed’s club dropped to 25-11 with the loss to St. Gregory’s. The Hillcats will travel to Arkansas Tech for a doubleheader on Tuesday. The games will be aired live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
