Hillcats Split Pair with Oklahoma Baptist

Rogers State saw its perfect home record tarnished with a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma Baptist in extra-innings, but rebounded to run-rule the Bison 8-0 in the nightcap at the Hillcat Complex on Thursday.

Kelli Dunagan and Lauren McKay traded zeroes for nine straight innings before OBU finally broke through in the tenth. An RBI ground-out by Brooke Stevens plated Claremore-native Jami Pate from third base to give the Bison the 1-0 victory. Dunagan (13-5) racked up a season-high 14 strikeouts in the losing effort and allowed just five hits. RSU managed just four hits in the contest. Pate went 3-for-5 for OBU. McKay earned the victory with a complete game shutout and recorded six strikeouts without yielding a walk. The Hillcats were 10-0 at the new Hillcat Complex before the loss.

It didn’t take long to wake up the bats in Game 2 as RSU scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. Denise Garcia started the rally with a two-out single to left field. Dunagan followed with a single and both players were chased home on a double to left by Taylor Whisenhunt. Sydni Jones added an infield single and a two RBI single by Randi Tyler capped the four-run inning.

RSU added four more runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to halt the game via run-rule, 8-0. Tyler finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Whisenhunt and Garcia also turned in two-hit performances. Stephanie Eggers (9-4) pitched five solid innings to pick up the victory. Tabatha Holcomb worked a scoreless sixth in her first appearance of the season.

Coach Dawn Reed’s club moved to 22-9 with the doubleheader split. The Hillcats are scheduled for two games Friday in Day 1 of the RSU Classic. RSU will play Kansas Wesleyan at 11 a.m. and St. Gregory’s at 3 p.m. at the Hillcat Complex, weather permitting.
