RSU Gives Names To Campus Streets

Rogers State University has selected names for four streets on its Claremore campus, reflecting the institution's history, past leadership and current status as a four-year regional university.

The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, the governing board for RSU, approved the street names at its meeting on Tuesday in Norman.

The names of the four streets will be University Drive, Colonel Horne Drive, Mosier Lane and Soldier Field Road. Signs designating the new names will be posted on campus this spring.

"The new street names will help us remember the university's rich history and the legacy of its past leadership," said RSU President Dr. Joe Wiley. "The signs will help students and visitors locate facilities on the campus and enhance the image of the campus."

The signs also will aid emergency responders in locating streets and buildings, he added.

University Drive will be the name of the main road through campus, reflecting the present four-year regional status of the university. University Drive intersects with Will Rogers Boulevard and Camden Road, providing the two main entrances to the campus.

Colonel Horne Drive will link University Drive to Blue Starr Drive on the northwest part of the campus. This street is named for Col. John E. Horne, the only alumnus of the Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA) to be named president of the institution and its last president. He graduated from OMA in 1939 and became president in 1968.

Mosier Lane, which will link University Drive with Herrington Hall, is named for Richard Mosier, who was president of Rogers State College from 1972 to 1995. During his tenure as president, Mosier oversaw the transition from the Oklahoma Military Academy to Claremore Junior College, a two-year institution. He also presided over a major expansion of enrollment and academic facilities on the school's three campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville and Pryor.

Soldier Field Road is next to the athletic field and links University Drive with Blue Starr Drive on the north side of the Claremore campus.
